Look! Stories!

writing whiskey soul

A short story, "Black is the Color," is up at Subterranean online. It's all about a Kelpie, and it takes place after a version of Blood & Iron that ends differently than the one that was published.

Because, you know, all stories are true.

There seems to be a little HTML problem, but I am sure that will be fixed any minute now.

Wow, that story was incredible--provoked a very strong emotional reaction from me. The ending felt very right, even though it wasn't particularly happy. *is inarticulate* Also, it was a nice twist on every little girl's dream of a horse just for her...

No, really. You DO inspire me by the way you write. I have the highest respect for your work and every piece I read, just keeps getting better. Your columns too, are constant sources of inspiration for me.

Thank you for helping me become a better writer.

Loved it. Of course. And it was perfect timing, given I finished Blood & Iron this weekend.

I do wonder if you'll get any hate mail for killing a favorite character though *g*

((snorts)) Bear LOVES killing favorite characters. ((is not bitter about end of Jenny trilogy)) ((not even a tiny bit))

It's true. The more I like them, the more trouble they're in.

YEAH. And you make _us_ like them, too, is the unfair thing.

Moi < --- still not bitter about (SPOILER) in the Casey trilogy

Oh, I'm used to it.

Nobody is safe around here. And if I ever make it through PATIENCE & FORTITUDE, I expect letter bombs.

This is my first time reading Your Ursine Majesty's work. Beautiful. And disturbing. Now that is what I call a kelpie! ;)

*big grin* *(with little fangs)*

OHyeah. Lovely and sharp, that one.

Reading it while finishing its necklace made me use extra silver, though, you realize. I think it changed the weight of the piece slightly. You'll see.

I will only dance gently while wearing it. I can't wait to see how it turned out.

Mmm, perfect. I love it when faerie isn't safe and defined by human needs. And I'll admit that kelpies have a special place in my heart by dint of being horse-shaped. =P

Faerie scares me.

Which I think it should...

“Where the river goes harnessed,” he said, “so go the river-spirits.”
“I know who you are,” she said. “You don’t fool me, pony.” And then she patted him on the neck and said, “And I don’t care.”

Ohhh wow.

((starts to read warily, realizing heart is often broken by Bear's endings))

((is enchanted))

((heart is broken))

OW! But ooh, so good.

I’ll go down by Clyde and I’ll mourn and weep
Man, that was great. And such emotional power and story condensed into such a short work, too -- I mean -- I felt I _knew_ the girl (altho we don't get her name! ((sniffles)) ).

Re: I’ll go down by Clyde and I’ll mourn and weep
There is just something about that adolescent hopelessness. I suspect we all recall it too well.

Re: I’ll go down by Clyde and I’ll mourn and weep
I refuse to answer that statement on the grounds that I might tend to go "Oh fuck yeah."

I loved the bit where he smoothed down her hair, or tried to. That was my favorite bit.

Thank you. That was a concise, excellent and exquisite story.

I like it that the characters in your mind do not always live out the same lives in every situation...

Well, that made me happy. In a sort of gloomy fatalistic way. But seriously, two characters, maybe one hour, everything both established and changed--way to do the job, woman.
