Memo to me: Get off my back.

  • Jan. 29th, 2008 at 11:11 AM
comics bone stupid stupid rat creatures
Yeah, so, the spreadsheet on which I track my writing productivity? The HUGE VAST CHASM OF NONPRODUCTIVITY I've been wallowing in, in which I accomplished nothing, oh nothing of merit!!! OH WOES I AM A FAILURE AS A RITER AND A HUMAN BEING?

Ten days. (Okay, there were two two-day periods before that when no writing got done, and one afterwards. But they were broken up by writing days between.)

During which I also cleared a set of CEMs. And helped bring the Shadow Unit stuff online.

Yeah. I really could use a slack injection, one of these lifetimes.

*rolls eyes at self and goes back to trying to figure out what that next scene might be*

You were sick, everyone gets a bit less productive when they're sick.

No, I wasn't sick.

We call those "Mental health days" around here.

We call it "Vacation."

But I get really bored.

Much of my boredom is alleviated by being an MMORPG and Civ addict.

Hmmm... had you ever checked out Atomic Sock Monkey's RPGs?. [info]chadu is the author/owner, he's teaming up now to get wider distribution. I think you'd be interested in Dead Inside: The Roleplaying Game of Redemption.

I'd describe it as sort of an "anti-D&D", you wake up one day and realize that you're soulless, and you want it back. OTOH, being soulless lets you do and perceive things normal people can't. The "anti-D&D" part is that you advance by making the world a better place, not engaging in looting and/or pillaging. Truth and Justice is also the first Superhero RPG that I've played that actually manages to explain, with in game mechanics why Peter Parker's personal life is so messed up and why Batman can whoop up on Superman.
Good stuff, and a disclaimer, I do playtest/proofread for him.

Hey, wait, you can have some of my slack, too! Slack is like growing zucchini -- more of it that ANYONE can use anywhere, ever. I can leave two baskets of slack on your doorstep!

Maybe three.

Best. Username. Ever.

My inner (which is really not so inner) Old English fangirl squeed in delight. Then it reminded me that I've got an edition of Christ I to finish editing and add footnotes to. Then it squeed again.

I think I'm worshiping your far superior coolness right now.

Actually, I was just talking to Wil Wheaton at the Phoenix Comicon, and he was complaining (in a very complimentary way) that you'd been TOO productive. Too much good stuff to read.

Alas. It's only too productive if you're not just barely making a living. ;-)

Well if it helps, someone who heard us talking asked about your books, and without missing a beat, we said "go buy them. ALL of them."

And I'm pretty certain they did. ;)

I think I see the problem--bears do not, in the wild, get vacations. They get people who are on vacation--not the same thing at all. So all you have to do is spend the down-time looking for unwary tourists and--

Hey, I'm trying to be "helpful" here.

That would be bad. Of course, you are a more evolved bear, and so might do something besides eat the tourists.
I'm not sure what, exactly, but there's bound to be something. Maybe you could give them leaflets on climate change, geophysics, and other imporant topics.

You and T, man. The way I can tell T's really really sick is if he actually stays in bed longer than an hour and doesn't get bored and start working on something. I bet you're the same way. I wonder what would happen to such people if y'all were plopped down on a tropical paradise beach with nothing to do. (I know what _I_ would do. Melt into a happy puddle.)

Sorry, I find it hard to be too sympathetic to someone who complains about her lack of productivity when I can't even keep up with what she's already published! Granted, I'm not the fastest of readers and my reading time is limited, but you certainly do have a more than respectable amount of books in print. Don't be so hard on yourself.
[info]matociquala wrote:

You'll be so kind as to explain that to my publishers, then, and get them all to relax my deadlines?

And get them to give me more money, while you're at it, please, so I don't starve.
