Ooo. [info]truepenny tells me it's time for the first lines meme!

baaaaa....

LONG!

1) Vethulf and Skjaldwulf did not get along. (A Reckoning of Men, with [info]truepenny)

2) Tin laced her fingers together across her gravid belly and frowned along her nose at the feeble human child. (An Apprentice to Elves, with [info]truepenny)

3) The first hint of returning consciousness was the icy tickle of fluid dropping across his lids, lashes, nostrils. (Chill)

4) It's harder to get good roles when you're dead. (Smile)

5) Nothing made Matthew hate himself more than waiting for the elevator. (Patience & Fortitude)

6) Ragged vultures spiraled up a cherry sky. (The Steles of the Sky)

7) I loved you not. (Posthumous Jonson)

8) On the first sunny day of Spring, Vladimir Karl Wilhelm Alexander, Prince of Freimarc, came to his father's father's fortress for the only time in his short sixteen years. He did not come willing. (A Treachery of Princes)

9) No first line, but an epigraph:

And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.

And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. (Grail)

10) Mrs. Cornelius stalked into the mahogany-paneled reception room, a jacket matching her chocolate trousers slung over her shoulder like the mantle of a queen, tiny emerald studs glinting in her ears like the eyes of a snake. (Unsuitable Metal)

11) A lone einherjar stood alone on the narrow band of black sand under the curve of the volcano's flank and raised his head to the impossibly bright spill of stars filling the sky. (Between the Bones)

12) No first line (Untitled virtual reality novel)

13) No first line (Untitled Heroic Hookers of the Old West novel)

SHORT!

1) The dream is smoke.

Smoke. Not fire. Not yet.

But you know the fire is coming. ("Smoke & Mirrors," Shadow Unit)

2) One gray-blue eye emerged from under the zippered edge of the jacket, blearily squinched. "From Hell's heart I stab at thee," Todd grated. "Is it the end of the world?" ("The Unicorn Evils," Shadow Unit, with [info]coffeeem)

3) Someone had left flowers again. ("Spell 81A," Shadow Unit, with [info]stillsostrange)

4) The first word was meant to be spoken quietly, if it should ever be spoken at all. ("The Death of Terrestrial Radio")

5) "We wouldn’t be having this conversation if you'd flunked Algebra." ("On Safari in R'lyeh and Carcosa with Gun and Camera")

Good dog, I really am totally out of short stories. 0.0

Oh, and La Datlow took a cute photo of me losing a Locus award to Paolo Baciagalupi. With the much-requested Purple Hair.

I wish there were any feasible way to outsource some of mine. I've got a dearth of ideas that don't require me to take a crash course in <insert subject of your choice here> first, with the result that precious few of them are moving.

And one of the few that doesn't require research grew Significance instead, and I'm still not sure where it's trying to go with that.

This meme, it interests me in an authorial fashion. Also, I cannot sleep. Hopefully before they drag me away to get drugged out of my sleepless addle of a life, I may coerce the terms of this meme from you, Oh Purple Haired One...

List the first lines (or first existing lines) of all of your works in progress. This has the magical ability to provoke work, and often finishing of said WIPS.

You have a good hand with the first line.
The purple hair is very cute. I must re-blue mine by Worldcon. It's been years since it was blue (and blue is, in my head, it's real colour.)

In homage to Michael Moorcock? Though I can't imagine his Mrs Cornelius ever stalked anywhere.

It's not NOT in homage, how's that?

I'm jealous of your gorgeous purple hair! What dye did you use to get it?

It's manic Panic untraviolet, but you have to blach to get a true color.

Ah, hm. I wonder what it does to gray.

Bounces off it, mostly, I believe.

Bummer. The student dress code forbids unnatural haircolor, which means I can't have it either--but if I dyed my hair a school color for spirit week, and then it didn't come out...oops, what a shame. But bleaching would remove my deniability.

Dress codes suck. *g*

(It does wash out in about a week. Mine is about back to blond streaks now.)

I think it'll be worth a try, then. And if nobody notices, so much the better. :-)

i have a ton of "gray hairs" along my hairline that are actually white. i dyed my hair royal blue once, on a lark, and the blue showed up screamingly on the once-white hairs: i had serious anime hair.

alas, because i had not bleached them (as [info]matociquala describes) to get them that white, they still had the "coating" that nonbleached hairs have. so the bright blue barely lasted a week (including the initial "don't wash for three days" time) before fading to the color of bluejeans. another week, and it was the color of very faded blue jeans, at which point i went back to washing daily with my normal shampoo. within another week or so it was completely gone.

Oh, that's fabulous! A week of anime hair and two weeks of "no rly I had NO idea" is perfect.

it's also subtle to begin with, since depending on your hair color it should just make the rest darker and all you get are colored bits.

Excited about numbers 1 and 2, extremely excited about number 5. (All of them look great, and that's more short stories than I currently have started. I seem to be out of them, too.)

How does this work? Is it the first line of one's uncompleted books and stories? Things currently in progress and heading for a specific destination? Speculative things? Long abandoned things you still love?

i must say, the reddish-purple (as opposed to the bluey-purples i tend to go for myself) does suit your coloring rather well! :)
