lion in winter dead

Goodbye, Mary. Thanks for everything, but especially this:

"Present tense!"

It's probably the mark of a life well lived when the result of your death is tens of thousands of people who never met you posting links to "Puff the Magic Dragon," isn't it?

...and stumbling around youtube, I found this, and it is awesome. And this, which made me cry.

"Puff the Magic Dragon" is one of the greatest legacies anyone could leave behind.

It really is very sad news. It's been a bad few days all in all for deaths.

I heard about it this morning on NPR. I feel very lucky that I got to see them live a few years back. I got to sit on the 3rd row, too - it was amazing.

The DJ on our local NPR station played 4 or 5 of their songs back to back, and I drove to lunch today hearing "Where Have All The Flowers Gone". I cried part of the way.

On the bright side, this let me discover her solo albums.

On the not-so-bright side, there is the obvious.

Back when I was a teenager, she had her own show on British television, late at night and just for one season, but it had a huge impact on me and I knew that she was the sort of woman I wanted to be when I grew up.

I think so.

My parents used to have an LP of a Peter, Paul and Mary live concert, and I listened to it over and over and over in my teens. For a very long time, Mary Travers was second only to Judith Durham in my the list of female singers I loved.

I remember one time at a PP&M concert, as part of urging the audience to sing along, they said, "A third of you will sing sharp, a third of you will sing flat, so it'll average out to on-key." And it kinda worked, actually. ;-)

Don't ask me why but I can't listen/watch "Puff the Magic Dragon" without crying, even after all these years. She'll be missed.

Yeah - it's Stewball I can't get through. Puff is my childhood and makes me misty. I do cry if I sing along, but Stewball - can't even hear it without bawling - boohoo sobbing. I have NO idea why. I mean other than it's fabulously minor. There's no connection between it and any event or person in my life.
