The odds are pretty good that the House Affordable Health Care for America Act (HR 3962) will go to a vote before the week is out.

As a self-employed individual without health insurance, who works extremely hard and is nevertheless considering taking on a fourth job to obtain some kind of coverage, I urge you very strongly to call your congressthing and express support for this bill, which is rather better than the Senate bill.

Healthcare is a human right, and the people being denied it are disproportionately poor, non-white, and/or women. We're talking about basic human decency and compassion.

What you said.

I called my Congressman yesterday. It took about 2 minutes.

Took me less than 90 seconds. But I already knew my guy was supporting, so I just had to say "I approve this message" and hang up.

I got a human being on the other end who took my name and city information. My guy is a Democrat, but this is a Republican district (it used to be Speaker Hastert's).

I got a very pleasant but frazzled-sounding human being who was delighted to get a friendly call.

*g* I'm not surprised by the frazzled. I'm sure that he or she has been getting calls from wing-nuts all week.

I've left a message of support to my rep already.

I'm about to leave a message of displeasure with Ms. Bachmann's office, informing her that I am not pleased with her stance. Since Ewa and I are looking for a new home, we're removing consideration of any place in her district from our list. Too bad; there's a really nice place out by Stillwater. Voting with one's legs?

Fourth job? That sounds... terrifying.

I will have to look up my congressman, I am stuck on state insurance because I can't afford insurance and haven't for some time now. Of course I am one of those statistical numbers of the droves of unemployed in our great nation right now. And facing major back surgery next month.

Done, even though my rep's a Republican who won't vote for it because he's a gigantic tool.

Is that the Dem one or the Repub one? They have ridiculously similar sounding titles, so I want to be sure I've got the right one.

I would, but I'm here in Canuckistan where we all have free health care already. And wouldn't give it up for the world. I assure you it's a worthwhile thing.

I shall, but with Jim (I'm a cancer survivor but since I'm a Congresseman I can blow this off even if I am, in thery, a Democrat)Cooper it's a toss-up. I won't say he's as bad an attention seeker as Joe Lieberman (but then, so few are) although he knows by instinct which his good side is...

I am afraid the Senators (Corker and Alexander) are a lost cause.

I'm a Brit with relatives in California. Some used to be nurses, so are covered, healthcare wise. One, a former silicon valley mid level executive, lost hers post redundancy years ago. I have some idea of what its like in the US as a result. I'm only now having to think-a little bit-about needing insurance because of dental problems. A lot of dentists here opted out of doing National Health Service (NHS, free at the point of delivery) work. But even so, I still have the right to insist on a referral to a major dental hospital where top professors who work in the NHS will treat me...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a healthcare bill to pass in the US. I accept you guys wouldnt want the system we have here- too bureaucratic, and we have queues for some things. (The dental hospital- an internationally renowned one, will take weeks to see me on the NHS, whereas if I could pay privately, they'd schedule me for 1 week's time.:(:( )
The French, German or Swiss systems which involve insurance, covering everyone, may suit you better. But even so, I've never had to think about what an operation, investigative proceedure, aftercare, etc etc cost. Never seen a hospital bill. Never had to factor in health costs when it came to taking/refusing jobs. The concept of pre-existing conditions was irrelevant. The NHS covers everyone, then those who want private healthcare have insurance as well if they want. The two systems exist side by side, about 20% have private insurance.(All the doctors here, however eminent, were trained in state funded Universities, so are very supportive of the NHS).Prescription charges were non existent on medicine until 10-15 years ago. Even so, they are currently £7 per item (about $12). The leader of our equivalent of the Republican party, though rich, for years used the NHS in the care and treatment of his severly disabled young son, who sadly died earler this year. As a result, he is a big fan.

Healthcare is a HUMAN RIGHT.
