Yeah...

As a general principle, I always up for a protest against gov'ment meddling in our business; I've seldom seen a situation that couldn't be made worse by federal interference.

Still... I'm not clear on this one. You make your living from your art. Shouldn't you have some protection for a rightful return on the (obviously strenuous) work you put in? Or am I misunderstanding the situation?

You're misunderstanding the situation. It's a bad law, and not only won't it do anything to protect me, it'll make it just about impossible for the internet to do what it's good at--aggregating and dispersing information.

Oh, I didn't mean to say it was a good law, or to imply that we shouldn't be opposing it. I just wasn't clear on the details - I just heard about this in the last day or two.

Having been in health care for years and years, I'm only too aware that federal legislation almost NEVER has the intended effect. Even well intentioned laws almost always just FUBAR the situation they're intended to help - nowhere, IMO, is the Law Of Unintended Consequences better demonstrated.

For sheer blockheadedness, it surely can't match the Contraception=Abortion push a few years ago, but, OK. I'm on board. Off to email my public slavemasters servants.

Thanks for the reply. I just wanted to hear from someone who actually owns copyrights and might have a more informed opinion.

There's a great quote from the BBC programme Yes, Minister about politicians' logic: "Something must be done! This is something; therefore we must do it!"

The problem, of course, is that there are many more bad things to do as a response than there are good things, so picking a response at random is likely to lead to bad things happening. And that's leaving out the fact that these proposed laws are being lobbied by Old Media as a way of controlling New Media.

Let my friend John Murphy explain it to you:

The relevant cliche is that we all need a source of warmth in the winter, but that doesn't mean we should set fire to our houses.

SOPA/PIPA are extremely poorly written and will have so many detrimental side effects* that it's worse than nothing at all.

-- Steve will also complain that it's US overreach, given that he's not an American and doesn't want your Feds to have that sort of control over his access to the Internet.

PS: The MPAA's response to Wikipedia's blackout, that this is a corporate abuse of the freedom of speech, is so laden with unintended irony that my computer screen started to rust.

* I almost wrote "unintended consequences" there, but it's hard not to succumb to the conspiracy theories floating out there.

I really hope the internets are useful in this situation. The fact that Wikipedia has a real blackout with links to ways to contact your representatives makes me somewhat hopeful.

Congress was fascinated by other governments being able to shut off the internet and social media sites during the Arab Spring, its no surprise that they want a way to do that here.

Nope, this is what happens when you piss off the internets.

Wikipedia did an amazing job at the protest; some sites only blacked out from 8 to 8, which makes sense but felt a little weak.

That said, I'd had a pretty awful day yesterday and the internet's fervor plus the great CM ep made me feel much better. Without spoiling (in case you haven't seen it yet), I think you'll REALLY identify with issues Reid mentions.

About ACTA?
You've been keeping an eye on that particular "trade agreement" process as well?
