Half an hour is standard here in Australia, too - generally the knock on effect is that people don't stress about getting to their seats on time. (It cracks me up that the companies that put them together don't call them "ads", they're a "pre show program".) I did once catch a session with I think no ads at all, but that was in the overpriced "fancy" screening room of a giant multiplex where they charge you like twice as much for plushy seats and perhaps a slightly larger screen. And it may just have been a glitch that time anyway, since I've never bothered to pay that much since.
