Just so you know:

I failed "Creative Writing."

Twice.

It was frustrating back then, amusing now; a textbook case of jealousy. I honestly always felt a little sorry for her, as by then I understood (or had begun to understand) the frustrations of rejection as much as the euphorias of a sale.

It was my 8th-grade science teacher who helped me sell my first story by giving me critical advice on what to fix. She was the only adult I knew at the time who was into s-f/f fiction, and though she was not a writer, she knew how to clearly suggest changes, without trying to alter what little style I had at the time.

I thank my every star that she got to me first, and the creative writing teacher experience came four years later.
You know what would've been even funnier? If you'd proceeded to sell the story that got a C to the same editor for her next anthology.

I also had an adult mentor who gave me incredibly helpful and useful advice, while leaving my developing style alone. Her constructive comments on one story were ten times more helpful than any creative writing feedback I ever got in school.
