I really like the things that happen to rock and roll when you let competent musicians at it.

Having accomplished the to-do list, at least to reasonable levels of satisfaction, I'm indulging myself in a little Youtube.

Unfortunately, there's not much in the way of recent Tull (Here's a clip of "Wond'ring Aloud" from the Living in the Past DVD, anyway). But this 1982 performance of "Sweet Dream" more than makes up for it.

I would have the children of that keyboard intro.

Also, you may note that, while Ian Anderson has discovered the dance belt, his phallic symbol is still the bestest one in rock and roll.

The beard, Ian, though... was tragic. Sorry, man. Too much hair and we can't see the hideous faces you're making, and where's the fun in that?

(This song, by the way, is to blame for my novelette "The Rest of Your Life in a Day," which I may even sell one of these days.)

W00t, that band rocks! It's getting hard to work with them on the screen.
Not only do they rock... they're cool.
Wow. I wouldn't have recognized that intro as Tull without the labels. (Though I might have recognized Gerry Conway from his time with Fairport and guessed it might be Tull.)

I do wish we had more video footage of them over the years....
I wish we had too. The first time I actually got to see them live was the Rock Island tour. They utterly blew me away.
I am really struck by the difference between Conway and Doane Perry.

Doane is the World's Mellowest Drummer, I think.
Dave Mattacks (to name another Fairport/Tull drummer) is pretty darned mellow too. (Think A Little Light Music.)
Which reminds me, did I ever tell you about the time I saw DM in the hallway of the dressing room at Meadowbrook?

Mind you, I ignored him because I was having too much fun hanging out with Lunasa... ;)
totally not.

Aw, you should have fanboyed him for me.
"David Mattacks on the Glockenschpiel!" Heh.

I mean Doane's stage presence, as much as anything. Unless he's laughing at Ian, he's pretty much invisible back there....
After Sweet Dream and Aqualung, I am now going to have to reclaim my boxed set from my sister, who 'borrowed' it a good 10 years ago. It's been at least that long since I saw them in concert, I'd forgotten how much I love them.

But yeah, Ian is... ummm.. odd looking.
Yanno, he's actually not a bad looking guy under the fuzz. It's just the Cuchulainn faces with the one eye big as a wagon wheel and the other sunk down to a pinprick.

*g*

Which of course is part of the loff.

Yeah, they're something else. Definitely not for everybody, but equally definitely for me.

I rather like some of the later studio albums. They've slowed down a bunch, but J-Tull.com and Roots to Branches and Catfish Rising rock my socks.

Ian learned how to play flute, you see.

No, I mean, *really* play flute.
