Bonus! Cognitive dissonance.

Devo, "The Girl You Want," circa 1980.

Terrible video quality in the clip, but man, check out the audience in the barettes, the granny dresses, and the FREDs, staring down at these boys in their glittery sharkskin suits, skinny ties and LEGO hats, taking the '80's right between the eyes.

That's Science Fiction, right there, boys.

I remember the first time my friends and I saw Devo for the first time: it was on Saturday Night Live. We were appalled.

Today, they don't look or sound odd at all. Which, come to think of it, is appalling to me. No wonder I don't listen to the radio any more.

*g* I listen to music that's four hundred years older than I am, so I figure it's incumbent on me to try to keep up.

It helps having friends in their early twenties who send me stuff.

When I viewed first-season 'Dark Angel' live on the air the first time through, I found Original Cindy's dialogue almost entirely incomprehensible, and distinct both from all other characters (except when they deliberately talked like her to tease her) and from anyone i'd heard in real life.

By the time I bought the DVDs, suddenly 'mainstream' street slang had caught up to whatever subculture the writers tapped in to write for Cindy, and suddenly she was no longer at all distinctive. It was weird.
