I just heard that Tillie Olsen died this week.

That thing she says, that she had to write because the people she grew up knowing never seemed to appear in books--

Yeah.

I get a bit of that, sometimes.

You did good work, lady.

That's sad. Sniff.

I heard Tillie Olsen read her short stories years ago. It was the first time I knew you could write about women who wash the dishes after supper instead of romance heroines and college professors. I didn't start writing for myself until many years later, but she changed my view of the world, that's for sure.
