there's nothing uglier than a man hitting his stride

Argh! Defeated by adding fractions with complex polynomial denominators. (I first typed "demonators," which seems curiously appropriate.)

But I fell back and regrouped and the third time through, got the right answers.

Of course, it might just be that I had memorized them at that point....

Your perserverance is impressive...when I was teaching, anything to do with fractions pretty much undid all the students.
A little while ago, someone asked you which book you were using, and you posted a link to librarything for it. I remember this distinctly, but I can't find it now, and of course I didn't do anything clever like make a note of it at the time. So...

What book are you using for all this, again?
Practical Algebra by Selby and Slavin
Thank you. *This* time, I'm adding it to my 'recommended reading' memories.
Hee. It's working, anyway!
I remember doing that. I don't remember much about it, but I remember doing that.
Do you get to do long division with polynomials? Because that's the sort of thing you know one mathematician did for another on a bet.
Not actually as bad as it sounds! It's long division, but with a different definition of numbers. I don't know how useful it would ever be, but it scares *everyone*.
Today's xkcd seems appropriate.

I have a stats class that's kicking my butt, so you have have my sympathies/empathy. I love stats, but I'm not necessarily skilled. It's the challenge and the joy of learning, you know?

You will overcome. I'm just jealous that you're doing this for fun!
