'tis the season

I'm doing charity for the holidays this year. A couple of gifts for my godson and my mother, cookies for close friends, and for you lot, I've bought some nice people a llama. Happy holidays: don't spend it all in one place.

There will also be small donations to the Nature Conservancy,  Doctors Without Borders, the ASPCA, Connecticut Public Radio, and a local food bank.

But there are more than a couple of other worthy charities out there, including one I will be supporting this year for the first time.

If you have not seen the episode of Nova entitled "A Walk To Beautiful," I highly recommend it. This is one of the most amazing documentaries I've ever seen, and it's available in its entirety online.

Health care providers estimate that one hundred thousand Ethiopian women suffer obstetric fistulas due to injuries sustained in childbirth. Women become pregnant very young, recieve insufficient nutrition, and as a result they endure protracted labor resulting in stillborn babies--and injuries that result in eventual incontinence, social ostracism, and heartbreak. In a country of 77 million, there are less than a 150 gynaecologists and obstetricians.

But there's a charitable hospital in Addis Ababa that can help.  (Donations tax deductible within the US.)

In charity closer to home, SFF stalwart Vera Nazarian is in danger of losing her house. Backstory and a way to help here.
