For those of you who were somehow spared

the true horror of Victorian newspaper serials, and who somehow think that Dickens was typical of his day....

Dickens was by any standard the cream of the crop.

And I've just discovered that the compleat incomplete Varney the Vampyre is online. In all its hellish glory.

"Oh, how the storm raged! Hail -- rain -- wind. It was, in very truth, an awful night."

edit: OMG! He's (or she) has also got Polidori! And Carmilla!

What a mensch!

That is tragic. The resting state of the universe should tend toward more Gorey, not less.

I know. The Polidori survives to history, I think, solely because it's finished.

Hmm. There's some sort of moral in that story--that of four or five people who all set out to write a story around the same time, a sort of NaNoWriMo of the pre-Victorian era, only two succeeded and only one didn't stink. *g*
