Good night, sweet prince.

Hal Clement (Harry Stubbs) was the first SF pro I ever met. He was typical of the breed, I find, but refined to its highest degree: articulate, gracious, genteel, dazzlingly intelligent, engaged, authentic--

--and prone to extremely bad puns.

I saw him briefly at Worldcon, but he was talking with friends, and I did not go up and renew my acquaintance with him.

He was a panelist on the single best convention panel I've ever watched, at Hypotheticon in 1993: a panel on worldbuilding which also included the geologist Anthony Philpotts and I think possibly Craig Shaw Gardner, although my memory is a bit fuzzy. If there are any heavens, his will probably involve metallic gaseous hydrogen.
