i guess there's just meanness in this world.

Synchronicity has been on my side this day. Well, starting last night.

As I was driving home from my mom's house last night, it occurred to me that I was perhaps underprepared for winter, as the household census of long pants that fit me consists of 2 pairs of jeans and 1 pair of summerweight cargo pants... which is, well, enough laundry for one day of shoveling.

So when I got home, I went to visit the Lands' End website, because their pants fit me. And I discovered that they were having a sale, with additional discounts and free shipping with email promo code--which was sitting in my "catalogs and commercials" folder, neatly sorted out by Eudora. So I got four pairs of pants for $94.00, which feels like a pretty good bargain to me.

Well, this morning, what do I find in my mail except... a royalty check from Czechoslovakia (That's right, a Czech check) for...

Obviously this was intended.

And then today when I was early for climbing and driving around trying to find a sushi joint to get lunch, I stumbled across possibly the best cheese steak drive in in Connecticut (M.J. Dukes in Wallingford) and got to eat that cheese steak I had been craving since yesterday. With, I might note, a birch beer.

Now I'm eating redneck Thai soup (chicken stock, crab stock, lemon grass, ginger, lemon peel, hot peppers, freezer Chinese dumplings from the Vietnamese grocery (just so), diced tomato, broccoli, Chinese broccoli, brussels sprouts greens, and lemon juice) and I am happy.

As soon as I have eaten it, mind you, I will begin on the 80-hour marathon of write the end of Range of Ghosts, or as much of it as I can possibly do between now and 10 am on Sunday.

Yes, there will be liveblogging/tweeting.

That soup sounds mighty tasty. Good luck with the marathon.
mmmmmm cheese steaks; there are a couple of places in Seattle that do them right, I'm told, have only checked out one of them, and that's in a building due to be torn down dammit.

but... birch beer??? *whimper* ghods, I miss that...
Birch beer! We make everything out of trees here. we haven't much else.
Yep. Trees and rocks and stone fences built up over the decades/centuries from the stones in the fields. Upstate NY, same thing. Maple syrup, I can get at Trader Joe's. Birch beer? Not so much. *sob*
Since 1993, it's either Slovakia or the Czech Republic... Or do they have publishers that span the extent of the old country? Inquiring minds want to know.
There's more than one cheese steak drive-in in CT?
Czech-ered pants?
Can you get fresh galangal at your local sto'? It's marvy.
