i'll set my house in order now and wait upon the will

Apparently, I am now reviewing chocolate for the Sleeping Hedgehog blog. The glamour! Also, oof, I ate too much.

In other news, I've been reading old Danny Dunn books all day. Really, it's research!

1) Charles Yu, How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe
2) Ben MacAllan, Desdaemona
3) Alex Bledsoe, The Sword-Edged Blonde
4) Catherynne M. Valente, Deathless
5) Kameron Hurley, God's War
6) Jodi Meadows, Incarnate (in draft)
7) Jay Williams and Raymond Abrashkin, Danny Dunn, Scientific Detective
8) Jay Williams and Raymond Abrashkin, Danny Dunn and the Fossil Cave
9) Jay Williams and Raymond Abrashkin, Danny Dunn and the Automatic House\
10) Jay Williams and Raymond Abrashkin, Danny Dunn and the Swamp Monster
11) Jay Williams and Raymond Abrashkin, Danny Dunn on a Desert Island
12) Jay Williams and Raymond Abrashkin, Danny Dunn on the Ocean Floor
13) Jay Williams and Raymond Abrashkin, Danny Dunn and the Weather Machine
14) Jay Williams and Raymond Abrashkin, Danny Dunn and the Universal Glue
15) Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi, The Thing Around Your Neck

Sadly, I think I read my copy of Danny Dunn and the Smallifying Machine until it fell apart. And I am noticing that there are actually two of these I never read. I shall have to find copies.

I am noticing a real progression on the level of sentence-level craft here: in the first books, it's decent plain prose. By the time I've gotten to #13, it's quite well-written and vivid while maintaining a sense of transparency and a very fast pace.

(Yes, I am reading these books in order to learn from their style and structure. Why do you ask?)

Also, these books are insanely socially progressive for when they were written. Bravo, Mr. Abrashkin and Mr. Williams. Bravo.
