It's been a while since there was food porn.Reason for stopping:
The boy is away, which means I get to eat whatever I want. Because I am a crazy person, and it's a hundred degrees out, I decided to fire up the oven, thaw out the duckling in the freezer, and make high-roast duck (as previously chronicled.) Stuff was needed to go with this--besides the potatoes from underneath--and I bought a bunch of fruit today and not many vegetables, so I decided to make fruit salad.
Alas, all I have access to here in
hell Vegas is supermarket produce--and mostly California-grown supermarket produce at that, which is often such a chore to eat that I begin to understand why people think they don't like fruit and vegetables. I suspect bad produce isa plot by the food packaging corporations, personally. Take me back to the land of farmer's markets!
So I took an inadequate persimmon, one of the objects that masquerade as clingstone white peaches on this coast (smushy, not buttery, and no juice to speak of.), a nice but slightly underripe Packham pear, one of those lovely little Mexican mangoes that are barely three bites, and an unlabeled melon of some sort from the Random Melon $.79/lb pile, which I have hesitantly identified as a casava, but you know how it is with melons.
(N.B. in the cold light of morning: I do know the difference between casava and casaba. It was not a tapioca melon, my apparent inability to type aside. I shall blame it on the beer.)
The melon paid for all. Soft, just sweet enough, with a yellow-green hide and absolutely jewellike translucent melon-colored flesh. I mixed all the fruit together, laced it with lemon juice and fresh mint, and then set some lemon zest, honey, water, mint, ginger, and triple sec on the stove to simmer while I waited for the duck to cook. The little candied clots of mint, ginger, and lemon peel on the bottom of the pan may just be the very best part.
Take that, insufficient produce.
In the meantime, I have sourdough and butter, and my second beer.
