There's strife in Iran (doot doot do doot do doo)

Twenty years ago today, at 01:23 local time, an uncontrolled chain reaction blew the lid off the containment vessel of reactor four at the Chernobyl nuclear plant.

There's a good deal of argument about the short-term and long-term effects of this event, and I'm not about to enter the debate right now. Except to mention the really wonderful sound bite NPR ran this morning, wherein an official associated with the containment project (still ongoing; there can be no cleanup, but they keep piling cement on top.) asserted the excellence of the Soviet government's response.

...so what if they neglected to mention it to the downwinders?

But Time Magazine has placed twenty year's of coverage online. Remember what it was like when governments kept potentially fatal secrets from the world at any cost? Back before the End of History?

NASA image.

There was a lot of controversy through the blogosphere a few years back about the accuracy of some claims on Elena Filatova's Chernobyl website, such as the source of the photos. However, they're still stunning. And she's added some night photos, taken by motorbike headlamp.

(no subject)

You know, I just remembered a series of very old Doonesburies in which a Revolutionary-War-Era Zonker is trying to learn silversmithing from (IIRC) Paul Revere. And Zonker is turning out these incredibly horrible pewter tankards, and keeps insisting that if he was only allowed to work in silver, he wouldn't have this problem, that his work needs real metal to shine.

This was me, with regard to writing, four years ago.

These days, I know it's the craftsman's fault when I bitch something up.

I guess that's progress.

veggie curry

for stillsostrange and others

In a heavy bottomed pan with a lid, heat enough olive oil to cover. Sautee about half a big onion until translucent, add three or four cubed red potatoes and one half cup of red lentils. One can of tomatoes (diced or just peeled) and a can of chicken or veggie broth, depending on whether you are a carnivore or not.

Curry powder, red pepper, black pepper, garlic to taste. Simmer until the potatoes and lentils are soft (~45 minutes). Add green veg--spinach, peas, mustard greens, kale, as you like it. Turn off. Cover and let sit ten minutes.

Serve with a squeeze of lime and nummy nummy yogurt on top. Does not need accompanying starch. It's full of potatoes, man. And comes out quite dry.

Yield: enough for a msall army. This is loaves and fishes cooking.
