muppetology animal deadlines

strychnine is a grand tonic, kemp, to take to take the flabbiness out of a man!

When I woke up at 6:30, it was 23 degrees out, with the wind chill putting it at 11. My windows are streaked with condensation and the light beyond them is silvery and thin.

Winter has arrived in Southern New England. It's beautiful out there. And I still haven't figured out what I did with my good gloves, though I found both pairs of backup gloves. Perhaps tomorrow's errands need to include a field trip to the Burlington Coat Factory and/or TJ Maxx, where they keep the gloves around here.

I've pulled the comforter off my bed and heaped it up on the couch for huddling under, but I begin to think that that was the wrong strategy: I think I need to make the bed and huddle there, instead. I'll get on that as soon as I've managed to pry myself off the sofa and make coffee and shower and dress... actually, no, I like the light in here better, in the winter. (My bedroom faces East; the living room/kitchen face South.)

Today's goals: get clean, drink hot beverages, work on Chill Sanction Chill until I finish a scene or the person who is interviewing me calls at 4 pm, go climb, come home, watch Criminal Minds.  Oh, the glamour! How shall I endure it?

you don't love me at all, but don't think that it bothers me

Three hundred words so far this morning, and in the process of figuring out what they should be about, I identified two scenes I need to add on the next draft. Which is useful work, even if it sometimes doesn't seem like it.

Unfortunately, I seem to have hit a patch of sleepiness, but I'm hoping the therapeutic application of a Barq's root beer I happened to have loitering in the fridge will fix that. (I don't usually have soda in the house unless I know I will be having house guests who drink it: the usual beverages around here are water, milk, coffee, tea, ale, and cider--when cider is in season. Also, I usually have stuff that can be run through the juicer. (currently, ten pounds of oranges, for example.) Yay, juicer. Anyway, caffeinated corn syrup beverage, do your devil's work on my shivering frame!)

I have to admit, my job has its drawbacks, like never eally being off-duty. On the other hand, it's really nice that "on duty" includes one's own living room.

Okay, that was a productive morning and afternoon. It's amazing how much more I get done when I can pry myself out of bed before 7.

1421 words today, to finish the first scene in Chapter 18. The book's going to come in a little under 400 pages on this draft, but as usual, it needs some additions, so I'm not overly concerned about it. Also, OMG, less than two chapters to go. As I just noted over on my frequently-neglected Amazon blog, if I can finish this draft by Thanksgiving, I will truly have something to be thankful for.

The light at the end of the tunnel may be an oncoming train, but it's a train I'm going to catch, by criminy. And then I will be entitled to break out my post-novel ennui icon, in celebration, and bugger off for a while.

I have determined that part of the problem--what I'm feeling as a lack of momentum--is that this book has no plot. Which is kind of a feature of the series--it's not like Dust has a plot either, by my standards, and my models for these books are Amber and Gormenghast--but it does mean that on second draft I am going to have to do a lot of work to up the tension and pace so readers don't notice that it doesn't have a plot.

Anyway. Time to go practice guitar for a bit, and then maybe grab a short nap before my afternoon work arrives.

Thank you, entire world...

For the roomba cat links. Yes, I have now seen the roomba cat. No, the Presumptuous Cat is highly unlikely ever to perform similarly, as her reaction to the Robot Monster is to hide in the darkest corner she can find.
