laying bait

Well, I just had the unsettling experience of getting 3000 words into a 4000-word story that's due Thursday and realizing that it's not going to be 4000 words. Guess it's back to the drawing board.

I've forgotten how to write short short stories. I was putting in white space as if it were a novel. I had better relearn the trick of density fast. Dear Bear: no transitions.

And that means I need a first lines meme. The idea here is that we post the first lines of unfinished stories, on the theory that we might then be inspired to finish a few...
