Spare words
I think spare words encourage a reader to skip, to get in the habit of skimming. Precise language rewards the careful reader. Flabby language frustrates him.
That is all.

I just write fluff, but I will build up lots of description, then go back and strip out all the extraneous to get to the meat.
When I read, books that just go blah blah blah get put down pretty quickly. I've go no time to read stuff that is above and beyond the point. Cruel but true.
