Mr. Ranty Pants Invades the Boston Globe

"Livid" does not mean "angry." It means "black-and-blue," the color of a bruise.

Technically speaking, the American Heritage dictionary tells us:

liv·id ( P ) Pronunciation Key (lvd) adj.

Discolored, as from a bruise; black-and-blue.
Ashen or pallid: a face livid with shock.
Extremely angry; furious.

Alas.

Also, I'd like to state for the record that it's my considered opinion that Mr. Powers' reading of Whitman is lukewarm crap.

But, you know. If he could be bothered to fact-check, he'd have a pretty good point.
