She said, a good day ain't got no rain.

To smut, or not to smut.

I've reached that spot that every writer dreads.

The one where I stare at the page and try to decide if I actually need the sex scene I'm contemplating writing, or if it's really just an excuse for teh hot gay sex by teh light of a dying nebula, and I'll just have to cut it later because it doesn't accomplish anything. (You guys think I'm kidding when I say I'm going to print a chapbook of all my deleted sex scenes for my 83rd birthday.)

The sarcastic version of the question is, if I include the scene, will the influx of slash fans make up for the outflow of people who find teh gay all icky.

Oh, wait. They probably won't be reading my books anyway.

I mean, I know it's got angst. And character development. And it might be a good time to start that sideslip into outer darkness I need to get going in here somewhere. But I'm not sure there's any plot in my sex.

Also, I'm having this whole what's-at-stake issue.

I know what's at stake. The characters know what's at stake. Their entire society is focused on what's at stake.

Showing the reader what's at stake without resorting to a vast, cosmic infobolus may be a bit of a trick.

This was easier when I didn't know what I was doing.
