twistedchick wants to know Who's driving this thing?

She also offers a roundup of relief effort news from CNN.

Making Light links Looka, another blog tracking events in NOLA.

Making Light links Respectful of Otters on the Red Cross not being allowed into New Orleans. ::

"Our presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city.” See, and here you thought that tens of thousands of people spent the last few days trapped in the Superdome or the Convention Center without food, water, medical care, electric power, or basic sanitation, in constant fear of violence, surrounded by the unburied corpses of their fellow victims, because they couldn’t evacuate. But all this time, they’ve been there by choice. If they had a Red Cross station distributing fresh water and sandwiches, they’d choose to stay in their fetid, corpse-riddled, life-threatening, lawless swamp of a city indefinitely. You know what those people are like, always sitting around waiting for a handout. Humanitarian aid just encourages them."

nihilistic_kid on being poor. really poor.

I'm going to back off the breaking-new news aggregating here, since information seems to be easier to come by now, and I'm very tired. Also, I have today and tomorrow off from the media mines, and I'm going to try to use it to not be bombarded by horrible images I can't do anything about.

I'll still round up any essays or comments I find particularly edifying, but I do that anyway, of course.

Good night, and good luck.

I'm going to beat the living shit out of Malthus in the afterlife.

(And speaking of Malthus, I found it interesting how Jared Diamond kept reffering to that man in his new book Collapse, with little if any mention of the bigoted and classist views that man held, which were blatantly obvious in his writings. But what else would you expect from a corporate shill? Sorry if I'm going off topic...)

You can use my hammer.
Thanks for the link soup over the past few days--I've really appreciated it. :)
That wasn't actually Making Light, it was us quoting rivka's non-LJ weblog, Respectful of Otters.
You usually indent your quotes! Okay, I fix.

Re: internet archive of online Katrina articles

Please do. I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!
