Mail: And, because apparently this week is a good week to be a Bear, the incomparable arcaedia just let me know that Night Shade books will be publishing a short story collection by yours truly in (we hope) late summer of next year. The collection will include four previously unpublished stories, which are "High Iron," "Schrödinger's Cat Chases the Super String," "Stella Nova," and "L'esprit d'escalier: Not a Play In One Act." It will also include one poem (the notorious "e.e. "doc" cummings") and seventeen other short stories and novellas, some of them previously a bit difficult to find.

Today's words Word don't know: gris gris,

BPAL Description:

A Latin word that means to sigh or draw a deep breath, that also suggests longing, desire, yearning, and a passionate wish. Ylang ylang with white plum, white orchid, jasmine, calla lily and lily of the valley.

My Notes:

Vial:  Ylang ylang, orchid, lilies, jasmine. A sweet, torrid, tropical scent.

Wet:  Tropical floral, very nice, if a bit sweet. But it's sweet in such an outrageous fashion that it dodn't feel frilly at all. This is feminine in an in-your-face Mae West kind of way.

Drydown:  It's fading down to a nice, soft, summer-evening-by-the-honeysuckle-bush kind of scent. Lovely.

Dry:  very faint lilies.

Verdict: If it's got lilies in it, they take over, and then vanish.

BPAL Description:

A gentle white scent, breezes laced with the scent of springtime blooms and citrus. Lemon, lemon verbena, neroli, white musk, white florals, white sandalwood, China musk, bergamot and a drop of vanilla.

My Notes:

Vial:  Warm and citrusy, a touch of woods

Wet:   Lemon! Sandalwood! Musk, but it's a sweet, comforting musk, not the dead animal tango.  Sandalwood and lemon.  Very nice.

Drydown:  Sandalwood.  With overtones and undertones. Quite pretty.

Dry:  This also seems to fade fast. Very sad.
