No, really. A real, pointless hobby. With no point. All time-consuming and generically frustrating and prone to sending one into screeching fits of despair. Just like my job, really, but without even the faint hope of remuneration.
This is largely because I'm fascinated by the kind of mosaic mode of found storytelling it entails, and most of the fanvids I see play really heavily on the meta, to the point where I really can't follow them without an intense familiarity with the source material (there are exceptions to this rule--for example, P.R. Zed's stuff, especially "Gay Bar," which is funny as hell even though I can barely identify half of the fandoms involved) but, yanno, if I see a vid with a kiss in it, and I know it's supposed to be important to the narrative, but it means nothing to me because I don't know the characters... well, I wonder if you can work around that. Create new narratives, instead of just metatextual ones... and so I feel the random urge to play with that.
I'm sure somebody else has done this work already, but I can never learn something without doing it. It's another downside to being primary-kinesthetic. (There are upsides; I pick up really fast once I start trying to actually do things. Just don't waste your time explaining it to me or showing me how to do it, because it'll just roll off.)
Also, on that topic, I wonder if it would help teach me to think more visually, because I suck at that. Who cares what stuff looks like?!
It has absolutely nothing to do with my having decided that the world REALLY NEEDS a fanvid version of the Richard Thompson cover of "Ooops! I Did It Again!" featuring John Barrowman's Doctor Who character, Captain Jack Harkness.
Oops!...I did it again
I played with your heart, got lost in the game
Oh baby, baby
Oops!...You think I'm in love
That I'm sent from above
I"m not that innocent
Nor with the (not new, mind you) realization that Harry Nilsson's "Spaceman" is the most perfect John Crichton theme song evar:
I wanted to make a good run
I wanted to go to the moon
I knew that it had to be fun
I told 'em to send me real soon
I wanted to be a spaceman
I wanted to be it so bad
But now that I am a spaceman
I'd rather be back on the pad
This is such a bad idea. Stop me before I vid again.
I'd have to be really careful not to get good at it. Or care too much about it. Lest I start actually working at it, and then, you know, it stopped being fun.
So, przed, heresluck, coffeeandink, etc, what sort of software do you recommend for a little occasional private copyright and trademark infringement? Not that anything will ever come of this, of course. Just making random inquiries. Sort of at random.
Right, I think I'd better go shower, run my errands, get lunch, and go to that movie, eh?
