"Do you know any stories?"
"I regret that I do not understand what you are saying."
"My personal biology is quite complicated."
(this is funnier in context, as communication, biological, and cultural differences are sort of epidemic in this story. but funny enough on its own, I think.)
Progress notes for 13 May 2006:
Because there is no angst in Undertow, (there are certainly situations worthy of angst, but none of the characters seem prone to angsting) my backbrain has to feed its craving for melodrama and sex by giving me chunks of other books.
So, last night when I should have been sleeping, I had to keep turning on the light to write bits and bobs of what eventually turned into a scene from Stars in which Mingan is contemplating hiring a rentboy.
...yes, that rentboy, for those of you who saw the initial version. The one Muire doesn't like to admit is a rentboy.
My characters cannot win for losing, I tell you what.
Anyway, 735 words of possibly the most masochistic internal dialogue I HAVE EVER WRITTEN, revolving around a character sitting in a bar, licking his lips.
Creepy motherfucker. I can't remember the last time one of my characters actually *shocked* me.
The good news is, this icon fits both books rather nicely. Except for the part where Stars as all genocide.
